News-stand launch for commemorative Diamond Jubilee bookazine with rare archive material (posted 23 March 2012)
A souvenir edition “bookazine”, The Illustrated Diamond Jubilee containing rare images of Queen Elizabeth II, has been jointly published by Illustrated London News (ILN) and Haymarket Media Group and will hit news-stands on 30 March. The 148-page commemorative publication, in celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years on the throne, tells the eventful story of Her Majesty’s life from a unique perspective. It draws on highly pictorial archive material from The Illustrated London News, as well as sister titles in its archive, including The Tatler, The Sketch, The Sphere, The Bystander and The Graphic, providing a privileged glimpse into the past of the reigning monarch.
With a print run of 53,000, The Illustrated Diamond Jubilee will be sold through WHSmith, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, The Royal Collection shops, Balmoral Estate, Peter Jones, and at selected news-stands in key overseas markets including the United States. It will be distributed in British Airways First Class and Club Class cabins and lounges worldwide. It will also be available to purchase as an iPad app through Apple’s App Store.
The publishers worked in close collaboration with The Royal Warrant Holders Association. More than 50 companies granted Royal Warrants have advertised and expressed their messages of congratulations to Her Majesty in the “By Royal Appointment” section, including Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason, House of Fraser, Peter Jones, Barbour, Champagne Lanson, Bernard Weatherill, Boots, Austin Reed, Corney & Barrow and Wedgwood.
The Illustrated Diamond Jubilee covers momentous events of The Queen’s extraordinary life. Royal expert and Daily Mail columnist Robert Hardman pays tribute to her 60-year reign in his introduction and reveals that Her Majesty is enjoying herself and her role more than ever in 2012. There is the full story of how she fell in love at first sight with Philip Mountbatten, now The Duke of Edinburgh, her close relationship with her sister Princess Margaret, how her wardrobe has evolved over the past half-a-century, and how she has juggled being a wife, mother, grandmother and Queen over the years.
Lisa Barnard, Chief Executive of ILN, said: “Some of the material selected has not appeared since it was first published and we have found some marvellous photographs which capture informal moments of family and personal life, from a family picnic to her absorbing passion for horses and her beloved corgis. These contrast splendidly with the pageantry and spectacle of the 1953 Coronation, the colourful royal tours and the magnificent jewels she has worn over the years. Our researchers have trawled the bound volumes and archive files to find hundreds of images of the Queen, from her first steps of babyhood, an idyllic childhood, her accession to the throne far earlier than she wished, and her rigorous globe-trotting schedule in the name of duty. It is right and fitting in the Diamond Jubilee year that we have published a gem.”
Since its inception in 1842 as the world’s first pictorial newspaper, The Illustrated London News and its sister titles took pride in reporting on court events, and coronations prompted each magazine to publish lavish commemorative editions filled with photographs, specially commissioned paintings and sketches, all with dazzling front covers.
Through Haymarket, the content will be available to third-party publishers for licensing and syndication. A gallery of pictures is also available for the public to buy as framed prints and merchandise at prints-online.com or to license through Mary Evans Picture Library.

The Lost King, The Lost Edition
Illustrated London News holds private viewing of the Lost Edition of Edward VIII “Coronation Issue” unveiled for the first time in 75 years. (9 December 2011)
Two days before the 75th anniversary of Edward VIII’s Abdication, publishing and digital agency Illustrated London News (ILN) today hosts a private viewing of the secret, lost edition of the Coronation Issue for King Edward VIII, The Illustrated London News Coronation Record Number 1937, in which Edward VIII co-operated in advance of his planned Coronation. The edition has been discovered by staff at ILN, owners of the ILN archive, having been buried by the previous publishers of ILN after news of the Abdication, and was never made public.
The edition contains actual portraits of Edward VIII posing in his coronation robes for well-known artists of the period, Fortunino Matania and Albert H Collings, as well as paintings of his crowning and homage at Westminster Abbey. It indicates that Edward VIII fully intended to remain King, right up until days before the Abdication announcement to the nation on 11 December 1936. The unpublished issue is believed to be the only one in existence. It was prepared secretly in advance as a printer’s proof, ready for publication immediately after the Coronation, and contains a few blank pages for the first photographs from the Ceremony itself and the final advertisements. The Illustrated London News was privileged in its unique access to royalty, especially in advance of significant events such as Coronations and Royal Weddings, and was able to commission exclusive portraits by well-known artists for its special issues.
At ILN’s viewing, held at its Spitalfields offices, additional portraits of Edward VIII in coronation robes by official royal artist Charles Willis are also released, after the artists’ grandson Roger Stanyon contacted ILN a week ago. Willis was commissioned frequently by sister publications in the ILN archive, Tatler and The Bystander, although it is not known where the portraits were intended to be published. Other rare material from ILN’s archive relating to Queen Elizabeth’s 1953 Coronation, including unpublished photographs of the royal family, is also on display, in anticipation of the forthcoming Diamond Jubilee celebrations – an event which of course would never taken place, had Edward VIII not abdicated.
Lisa Barnard, Chief Executive and owner of Illustrated London News, said: “We were thrilled to discover the unpublishedCoronation Number for Edward VIII and it is moving to see the splendid images of the King in his coronation robes and the blank pages that were never filled with photographs of his actual coronation. What I have found fascinating are the handwritten notes attached inside the front cover, dated 3 December 1936, by the editor, Sir Bruce Ingram, entitled “Revisions if Ed. VIII abdicates” setting out the alterations to the publication if Edward VIII were to abdicate and the new line of succession. The issue is like a vignette capturing the detailed planning that went into the Coronation months before the event, and the shock and disruption it clearly caused. It is understandable that the proprietors would not have wanted to jeopardise the ILN’s special relationship with the Palace by releasing this material at the time.”
From the excitement generated by the Oscar-winning film The King’s Speech to Madonna’s recent feature film W.E., about the love affair of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson that ultimately put a stop to ILN’s Coronation issue from being published, the unpublished issue is likely to cause considerable interest both in the public and academic spheres.
Illustrated London News Limited is currently exploring options for the release of the unpublished Edward VIII Coronation issue.

Sports magazine Podium hits selected newsstands from third issue featuring footballing legend Pele (posted 08 December 2011)
PODIUM, the upmarket sports magazine aimed at affluent men, will be sold at Harrods, Selfridges and other upmarket retail outlets from January 2012, following its successful launch earlier this year. The third issue, currently out, features an exclusive photoshoot with legendary Brazilian footballer Pelé by photographer Simon Emmett and interview by PODIUM editor Andy Tongue.
Published by ILN (Illustrated London News) as a bi-monthly title, 35,000 copies are currently distributed exclusively to business and first class airline passengers, including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Emirates, and Eurostar Premier Class and private jet lounges by global airline supplier DMD. Selected excerpts from the magazine are available online at www.thepodiummagazine.com.
Lisa Barnard, Chief Executive of ILN, commented: “From the outset our strategy has been to secure a distribution footprint for PODIUM that gets the magazine straight into the hands of its target affluent audience. Extending the distribution to very selected retailers which attract a similar audience therefore makes sense. The phenomenal pick-up rate of PODIUM through the business and first class lounges of airlines and onboard has given us the confidence that the magazine can also work on a paid-for basis.”
PODIUM magazine celebrated its successful launch last night in London hosting a sports quiz attended by sports marketing agencies and brands alongside sports personalities, rowing Olympic gold medallist Matthew Pinsent, rugby union player Hugh Vyvyan and Olympic skier Chemmy Alcott.
In addition to the Pelé cover feature, the December/January issue includes interviews with England spinner Graeme Swann and architect Rod Sheard, who designed the Olympic Stadium in Stratford. Also under the microscope are the way television is changing football, the commercial success of women’s golf and a look at horse race ownership at the Tattersall Sales.
PODIUM provides incisive analysis, exclusive interviews and major profiles of sporting superstars, featuring the men and women who make their names both on and off the field of play, and showcasing the passion and drama of top-level sport. Iconic imagery and illustrations, including original photo shoots by top-name photographers, give a high visual impact. PODIUM’s editorial range extends to the Olympics, golf, rugby, tennis, sailing, racing, polo cricket, and F1, among other sports, as well as the business of sport (including sponsorship and corporate hospitality) and the latest cutting-edge equipment, accessories and men’s grooming products.
Issue four (Feb/Mar 2012) will feature PODIUM’s first female cover star Jess Ennis plus interviews with LTA Chief Executive Roger Draper, the world’s best polo player and Arnaud Bamberger, Executive Chairman of Cartier UK, a profile of the Volvo Ocean Race, as well as previews of the Cheltenham Festival and the Six Nations.

PODIUM launches to industry
(posted 15 August 2011)
PODIUM, an upmarket sports magazine aimed at affluent men, has hit the ground running since the launch of its first issue. Published by ILN (Illustrated London News Ltd) as a bi-monthly title, 35,000 copies are distributed exclusively to business and first class airline passengers, Eurostar Premier Class and private jet lounges by global airline supplier DMD. The magazine is also available online at www.thepodiummagazine.com.
“In its first few days of placement, the passenger demand and uptake has been staggering. We have been bowled over with positive feedback from our airline clients who have said that PODIUM delivers an in-depth, intelligent coverage of sport that their premium travelling passengers have been seeking. In the current economic climate, it is exciting to be able to offer such a quality new publication to our airlines as PODIUM,” says Simon Hancock, Distribution Manager for DMD.
PODIUM provides incisive analysis, exclusive interviews and major profiles of sporting superstars, featuring the men and women who make their names both on and off the field of play, and showcasing the passion and drama of top-level sport. Iconic imagery and illustrations, including original photoshoots by top-name photographers, give a high visual impact. PODIUM’s editorial range extends to the Olympics, golf, rugby, tennis, sailing, racing, cricket, and F1, among other sports, as well as the business of sport (including sponsorship and corporate hospitality) and the latest cutting-edge sports equipment, accessories and men’s grooming products.
PODIUM launched with an exclusive cover shoot and interview with the world's most recognisable sports star and fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt, excerpts from which were the back-page lead story in the London Evening Standard on Monday 8 August.
Issue Two features racing's cheeky chappie, Frankie Dettori, on the cover with an exclusive photoshoot and an interview with Red Bull's Team Principal, Christian Horner, as well as analysis of the rise of the “Sporting BRICs”, the mental battle for success in golf and Novak Djokovic’s rise from “Joker to Ace”.
“I’ve just read the debut edition of new sports mag PODIUM — upmarket, insightful and very entertaining,” says Matthew Horler, Marketing Director, Eurosport.
Lisa Barnard, ILN’s Chief Executive says: “What sets PODIUM apart is that there is currently no high-end magazine aimed at an affluent audience that covers sports stylishly and intelligently. This is a magazine about people at the top of their game, which is read by people at the top of their game, on the device of their choosing. With our unique distribution model we have a guaranteed, captive audience from the moment of launch, and the high proportion of business people flying first or business class with a passion for sport means PODIUM will be a must-read. News-stand launch for Royal Weddings souvenir bookazine by ILN and Haymarket
(posted 8 April 2011)
The Illustrated Royal Weddings: Victoria and Albert to William and Catherine
A souvenir edition "bookazine", The Illustrated Royal Weddings, has been jointly published by Illustrated London News and Haymarket Media Group and hit news-stands on 6 April. The publication draws on rare archive material from The Illustrated London News, as well as sister titles in its archive, including The Tatler, The Sketch, The Bystander, The Sphere and The Graphic, setting the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in the context of its heritage.
With a print run of 46,000, The Illustrated Royal Weddings is being sold through WHSmith, Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Fortnum & Mason, The Royal Collection shops, including Buckingham Palace, Holyrood Palace and Clarence House, and at selected news-stands in key overseas markets including United States. It is also being distributed in British Airways First Class and Club Class cabins and lounges worldwide.
The publishers anticipate this special edition will appeal to an audience that is appreciative of the heritage and tradition of royal weddings in this country. Some of the material has not appeared since it was published, and covers items such as the nine-foot "bride cake" for Queen Victoria's nuptials in 1840, wedding gowns through the decades, style icon brides, the dogs invited on royal honeymoons, and spectacular wedding presents, from a Kenyan hunting lodge to an ostrich shawl.
The Illustrated Royal Weddings includes countless gems – such the photograph of Earl Spencer, resplendent in Guards uniform, attending the wedding of Prince Albert, Duke of York, and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon at Westminster Abbey in 1923. Little did the Earl and Countess know that 88 years later their great-grandson would be heir to the throne with his own wedding held at the abbey.
Pictorially led, The Illustrated Royal Weddings recounts the drama and style of royal weddings from Queen Victoria's era to the present day. Since its inception in 1842 as the world's first pictorial newspaper, The Illustrated London News and its sister titles took pride in reporting on Court events, and a royal wedding prompted each magazine to publish lavish commemorative editions filled with photographs and sketches, all with dazzling front covers. Researchers have trawled the bound volumes to find hundreds of images of past royal weddings, many of which have not been seen since first publication.
Through Haymarket, the content will be available to third-party publishers for licensing and syndication. A gallery of pictures is also available to the public to buy as framed prints and merchandise at www.prints-online.com.

Marketing East Midlands online
(posted 15 January 2010)
ILN has been appointed to manage East Midlands Trains’ digital drive-to-site strategy. We will be taking digital services to customers and markedly expanding the brand’s digital footprint.
East Midlands Trains, part of the Stagecoach Group, runs fast train services to London from Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham and Leicester alongside regional services. ILN managed the relaunch of eastmidlandstrains.co.uk in September 2009, which saw an immediate 20% uplift in sales. ILN also publishes the successful Go Out magazine, which is distributed on board East Midlands Trains.
ILN brings unparalleled experience of the public transport sector to East Midlands Trains’ marketing strategy. ILN has worked with public transport companies such as GNER, National Express and South West Trains for years and its commitment to creating engaging products, services and content that drives traffic and conversion perfectly aligns with East Midlands Trains’ digital proposition.
